Archery

I entered the sport as a beginner, reached state podiums and a national event in my first competitive year, and then chose to begin again in a more demanding discipline.

Why I shoot

The target does not care how convincing the explanation is.

I started archery because I wanted to learn something whose feedback could not be negotiated. A shot is the combined result of posture, alignment, release, focus, and repetition. Small inconsistencies appear on the target, which makes improvement both frustratingly honest and deeply satisfying.

I began competing with barebow, a stripped-back discipline shot without a sight or stabilizers. Within my first competitive year, I earned bronze at the Missouri State Indoor Championship, gold at the Missouri State Outdoor Championship, and competed at the national level.

The next discipline

Why move to Olympic recurve after finding early success?

Olympic recurve is the bow style used in the Olympic Games. Unlike barebow, the setup includes a sight, stabilizers, and a clicker that signals a consistent draw length. The added equipment does not remove difficulty; it makes the shooting process more exact and exposes a different set of technical demands.

Changing disciplines meant giving up the comfort of what had started working and rebuilding my shot around a new process. That is the part I value most: choosing a higher standard before the current one becomes comfortable.
